Meta Expands Muse Assistant Capabilities With Custom App Spaces
Meta is rolling out a new spaces feature for its Muse AI agents, allowing users to build custom, app-like tools through chat.
Meta is expanding the functionality of its Muse AI agents with the introduction of "spaces," a new feature designed to let users create customized, app-like experiences directly inside the interface. According to TechCrunch, spaces function as breakout conversations or custom project environments that live in the sidebar of the Muse application. The Verge reports that users can prompt the assistant to build tools such as a shopping hub, school dashboard, music tracker, trivia game, holiday gift tracker, or wedding planner by simply describing the idea in chat.
The engineering behind spaces extends beyond static text generation by integrating with external applications. Meta states that users can connect outside services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, OpenTable, and Notion. Once linked, the AI assistant continuously pulls information from these platforms in the background. This allows the custom spaces to automatically update pricing, upcoming concert dates, savings progress, and schedule details without requiring manual user queries.
Interface flexibility is another core component of the rollout. Meta allows users to organize their spaces by keeping them in the sidebar, moving them into the main tab, or scheduling when specific interfaces appear. For instance, a user might keep a weekly planner up front during the workweek and swap it for weekend plans on Saturday. Users can also interact directly with elements inside their spaces by checking items off, adding notes, and making manual edits.
Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the feature on X, noting that he has used spaces to build a BBQ game, an event tracker, and a home control dashboard. Alongside the spaces rollout, The Verge notes that Meta is bringing new "Active Memory" and "Active Focus" capabilities from its Muse Wonder AI model into the Muse app and Meta AI chatbot, improving the system's ability to retain relevant context and work toward specific goals.
The rapid expansion of the Muse ecosystem comes amid strong early adoption numbers. During its October earnings call, Zuckerberg reported that the agents had reached 10 million users in the U.S. and Canada in less than two months. The company is actively building out companion features, having also introduced Muse Voice for video chats and verbal commands. Meta is currently rolling out spaces to all Muse users while exploring ways to enable sharing and collaboration among multiple users.
In the broader consumer AI landscape, Meta's agent strategy competes with other consumer-focused offerings featuring cartoonish personas, such as OpenAI's dots and SpaceXAI's Grokbot. As tech companies pivot toward application-layer agent wrappers, the success of these features will depend on how reliably background integrations handle multi-app data synchronization and whether users prefer purpose-built interfaces over traditional chat windows.
